Many of the Criswell designs are not intended to be stitched using ONLY water soluable stabilizer for the reason you stated. You must make a "tulle" sandwich (a layer of tulle between layers of WSS) so they will not fall apart. The instructions which accompany the designs tell you which designs need this. HTH. But, if you would like to see how a simple design works, download the Tatted Edge Doll Bib from my designs page. This is using an appliqué (for the bib fabric) and then adding the tatted edge with the embroidery hoop. That stitch is a built in on the Pfaff sewing machine, just resized a bit to work better as tatting. You can do edgings by stacking several rows of this same stitch on top of one another or several other stitches on the machine. Best way to figure this out is just to play with it...so much depends on your thread and what you actually want to do with it. Keep in mind that the stitches need to have an underlay or row of plain straight stitching to keep them together when they are sewn out on dissolvable stabilizer. The more underlay the rounder and more like tatting the stitches really look. They will also need tabs (stitches) that connect one line of stitching to another in order to keep their shape. You can actually pull machine stitches into the PCDWin software, add the underlay that you need and send them back to the machine ready to be sewn on running stitch patterns as well. The floor lamps are sand colored, stand about 4 feet tall and have flexible gooseneck arms to adjust the position of the fluorescent lights. They are used for reading or by crafters for sewing or needlework. Labels indicating "OTT-LITE TRUECOLOR FLOOR LAMP" on the stand and "OTT-LITE" on either side of the shade identify the recalled floor lamps. Check the label on the OTT-LITE ELECTRONIC BALLAST plug. The plug on the recalled lamps have white lettering on a black label and bear the model number DMBLH-18W or DMBLP- 18W. Craft, hobby and fabric stores, including Hancock Fabrics, sold the lamps nationwide from November 2000 through December 2000 for about $170. PROBLEM: An electronic component inside the plug can overheat, presenting a fire and burn hazard to consumers. INCIDENTS/INJURIES: Environmental Lighting Concepts has received three reports of the plugs overheating, including one plug that produced smoke. No injuries or property damage has been reported. WHAT TO DO: Stop using the recalled floor lamps immediately, unplug them and contact Environmental Lighting Concepts for free replacements. No, we didn't knowingly change stitch density. When a program gets as complex as Thred is now, it is very easy to have "domino" effects, where you change one thing and it causes unplanned changes in other parts. That's why Thred is about ready to quit changing. Marion's still hoping to add PES file format, since he has already invested a lot of work in that and we have users waiting for it, but there aren't many more features coming. I agree that the conversion from OneList to eGroups was so much easier, in fact, automatic as I recall. I also had difficulty getting registered at Yahoo - just had to keep trying until the server accepted my information. The problem most people had yesterday converting to Yahoo was more than likely caused by so many trying to convert simultaneously. But - none of the other lists I am on have mentioned moving so I will still be on Yahoo Groups no matter what (LOL). When you convert to Yahoo there is an option which you can "uncheck" if you do not want your personal information used for commercial advertising, etc. This may not be foolproof - I don't know. The Terms of Service and Privacy statement are no different than eGroups had. Most people probably never noticed these terms since the OneList to eGroups conversion was automatic. Some moderators on other lists I am on have chosen to not open the Files area of their list but everyone has an option of not uploading anything to the Files if you are concerned. We are all susceptible to having our information spread around regardless of the internet sites we visit. Just be careful about the information you give. JMHO. My dust bunnies are in mourning. I got a message from Mike Ober saying that new equipment is installed for Quiltropolis. One reason you may not notice much difference is that Marion has a bit of code in Thred to change a lineform into a closed form (or the reverse) when you are trying to fill a form that's not a closed shape. You can also make that change in the Form Form, buy selecting the form, then hitting "F" and clicking on the form type, in the top row. It toggles from line to freehand when you click. You can use "Edit/Convert to ribbon" only on a line form. I am trying to change the stitching order of a design. I have tried Edit/Set/Form Number and the forms are in the correct order now, but they still do not stitch out in the order I wish them to. What I am trying to do is switch two colours in the stitch-out. In other words, get the second to last colour to stitch out last. Any suggestions as to how I can do this. Thanks for any help. When you use Edit/Sort/By Form, Thred sorts by color number, then form. So if you have 2 forms, one color number 1, and one color number 5, Thred will sort in color order first, then look at the form numbers. So form number 3 could stitch before form number 1, depending on the colors chosen. I personally find it much easier to think in color order, rather than moving the stitches around so they will stitch out last, I prefer to have the stitches in the correct color order, and change the displayed colors. You can very easily change what the colors look like by clicking on the second column of colors, and choose what actual color you want to assign. So although color number 1 is black (in the very left hand column), you can change the display color to be anything. And, of course, when you come to stitch it, you can choose any color thread you like. About lists: We are still unable to get our ISP to deliver the majordomo list they promised, but I spoke with Beth Ober at Quiltropolis today. She says those of you having trouble using ThredTalk in AOL 6 and Netscape 6 can change the font settings to Ariel. That is supposed to by pass the html problem. In addition to that, we have asked her to make ThredTalk an HTML list. That might annoy some people, but may also make it possible for all of us to use Thredtalk. They don't. Just the order of stitches change. 1. Select the 'to' stitch by putting the mouse cursor over the 'destination stitch'. This is the one that should stitch before the group you want to move. Press the 'C' key. 2. Click Edit / Set / Order Mark. (You should get an almost invisible arrow pointing at the stitch.) 3. Highlight the stitches to move. The way I do this is select the first stitch using the mouse and the 'C' key, then use shift + right arrow to get all the stitches I want. 4. Then click Edit / Move / To Mark. 5. The stitches DO NOT MOVE from their set positions! The first stitch selected in step 3 is now the next one to stitch after the one selected in step 1. The last stitch selected in step 3 is connected to the one after the one selected in step 1. (read that 3 times ). For some reason, I hardly ever use 'move to mark'. Alfie and I seem to use thred quite differently! Alfie has of course been using it a lot longer, and I'll probably get to love 'move to mark'. The way I do it is create forms for everything. When I've got all my forms in the right order, then I work on jump stitches. For that I just use the space bar to add stitches. To me this seems simple. If you can create a form, move a form and drag the odd stitch, change a form's number and color, and use the space bar, then you can create a design. Perhaps I am missing something! (Truly, it worries me.) More likely, I must do different types of designs. I don't do logos or solid designs, just butterflies, scrolls, and flowers - that type of stuff. I'm sure that once we learn the software we will be able to read the manual and it will be very clear. Some of the software experts I know have at least five "testers" for their instructions prior to presenting their teaching seminars, workbooks, or CDs. Sometimes when you are so knowledgeable it is difficult to "step back" and look at something as a beginner. I will try out the suggestions and let Alfie know what happens. I sometimes wonder if things don't work quite so well with Windows 95 (which I am running) because it sometimes takes me three or four tries to get something to work in Thred. Maybe I click to quickly. Re the terrified bit--yes I know I can make changes. I guess what I find so maddening is I think I understand the manual and stuff doesn't seem to work the way "I" think it should. I have absolutely no problem with PCDWin which I know some people find frustrating--to me it is a breeze. I guess what really frustrates me is the fact that I help to teach computer digitizing and I don't know why I am having such trouble with Thred. Normally I can open up a programme and just go to it. I always read the manual. Possibly part of my problem is that I sort of expect it to work like PCD Win and, of course, it doesn't. I really like the features in Thred--if only I could get them to work. I have downloaded all of Caroline's lessons and worked through them as well as Vanessa's videos and I understand that part--it is when I get into selecting stitches and ranges of stitches and moving colours around that the problems occur. Anyhow will plod on--this is not going to defeat me. Again thanks for the help. Sue 773 From: susan christoffersen Date: Sun Feb 4, 2001 3:01pm Subject: Move to Mark Again Hi: EUREKA IT WORKED!!!! Thank you, thank you Caroline and Alfie. I was missing out a step; namely pressing the "C" key. As soon as I did that it worked. I was trying to click on the stitch to highlight it (I mentioned in my previous message that I am PCDWin brainwashed) and then used the "period" key to place the mark etc. etc. but it wouldn't work. I also tried the right click on the color ribbon and couldn't get that to work--now it does. I had even tried selecting forms and trying to put marks in that way, but the "C" key is the answer. Now I have another question. Am I correct in thinking that the Underlay feature only works with the border fills? I had that turned on in the Preferences and note that only the Perpendicular satin had underlay stitches, not the vertical, horizontal, or angle fills? Funny, one little success makes all the difference--I feel so much better about the whole thing now. Maybe there is hope for me yet. Regards from the (currently) sunny west coast of Canada. The mouse clicks and hotkeys are so different. I also find myself trying to use Thred hotkeys in Corel Draw and other programs. Especially the z, x, and a keys. > Am I correct in thinking that the Underlay feature > only works with the border fills? For fills, I copy the form to another layer and use the copy for underlay, made with square fill ends and a fill density of about 2 . I always try everything that is posted, and keep trying until I get it to work. There is an amount of frustration later, when you know that you did something that you can no longer remember how to do...but at least you have a direction to look at in the instructions. The problem with most of these programs is that there is so much to learn that even reading the instructions can be overwhelming. You don't know what the instructions are talking about, you forget the hot keys and you forget that there are probably 3 ways of doing the same thing. Add to that the frustration of trying things the same way that they work in another program and you find yourself concerned that you will never get it all straight. Practice, even by yourself. Do the tutorials, try those things that are mentioned in the posts, and keep at it. Slowly you will find that it is getting clearer and clearer. Jackie, Look under Preferences, Fill ends is third down the list. A click there toggles between square or pointed. Make a form and fill it at a wide fill spacing (2 mm ?), with "Fill ends/square" chosen. Then change the setting to "Fill ends/Pointed" and refill that form. The difference is very noticeable. If you accidentally leave square fill ends on and apply an ordinary fill (vert., horiz, or angle) with a fill spacing at .3 or so, it will make a long line of tiny stitches in the edge of your fill. That's not desirable, but used correctly, that feature makes very neat underlay . Well, the saga continues. After managing to use the Mark feature I thought I would do some serious digitizing with Thred. Brought up my bitmap, set the Preferences for the Pfaff 120 hoop and did all the curly stems with a Line form and Bean stitch. All the same colours and did all the stems for the whole design. Saved the file. Opened up a new file to digitize the flowers etc. Whizzed along doing that--Pfaff Big Hoop as before, angle, vertical, horizontal fills--no sweat--worked in layers, moved sections around, moved colour order many times just to prove to myself I could do it, changed colours, watched the stitch out--wonderful thinks I. All I have to do now is combine the two files--flowers and curly stems, hide the jump stitches and put in the knots and Voila! I am finished. Not so. Saved the flower file, then went back and opened up the Curly stem file to find that somehow it had saved itself in a different size (much smaller)--now the two files would not fit together properly. The curly stem file came up as 25.04 mm wide x 55.43 high, when it should have been 36.72 mm wide x 81.30 mm high. I have tried to figure out why this happened. I didn't resize it before saving, but I may have had the design zoomed in bigger when I saved it. Would this make a difference; otherwise I can't figure out what happened--I must be cursed. (Can't even blame the cat for this one--she likes to sit on the mouse when I am trying to use the computer and this time she was curled up on a chair.) Anyhow I did resize the curly stem file and now the two files are saved as one. (In case anyone is saying to themselves why didn't she just do the whole thing using the Layers tool, --well, I wanted to try out the Import feature.) Has anyone else had the problem of a file saving itself as another size? I have another question, I know you can launch Thred from Embird, but can you launch Embird from Thred? Could be handy. Yours in hope. Sue 779 From: Alfie McCoskey Date: Mon Feb 5, 2001 2:48pm Subject: Re: insert file and hoop size- cursed? Hi Susan, Did you look at the preferences setting for the hoop size? You can "Select all Forms and Stitches" and grab the corner of the select box, then pull it back up to the size you wanted it to be. Check your maximum stitch length first. For combining the two files, how about putting a guide stitch on each corner of both files temporarily. Then "File/Insert file" the other half in. If you are working in the same hoop size, on the same bitmap, it ought ot position it correctly. No, sorry, at this time you can't launch EmBird from Thred.
