Alfie McCoskey 274 From: Alfie McCoskey Date: Fri Nov 17, 2000 7:18pm Subject: Re: seeing end marker Marion says, "Perhaps ungroup isn't the best term." What he meant is that the end bracket ,"]" , unselects the group and selects the end stitch. So if you want the end stitch selected, use the "]" key and the "Z" key until you can see that stitch. That way you will zoom right in on it, assuming you don't have a zoom mark somewhere else- so you ought to start this operation by hitting the "Q", I suppose. I also frequently select the end stitch in a form by selecting the color the form is filled with on the right color ribbon (left click on the color in the ribbon) and hitting the "end" key. "Home" will get your the first stitch of that color. If I want to connect two forms that are near each other, I use the "end" key on the color ribbon and then hit "add" on the color bar. Then I just insert some stitches using the space bar, free hand. If you select them after you insert them, you can read the minimum and maximum stitch length on the left side of the screen and see if they are reasonable. Instead of attending the most important tasks I decided to play a little with the Thred program as I did get the key from Alfie in my absence.(how is that for priorities?) I played for couple of hours creating different forms and tried to understand all the commands on the top bar. I think I do have it under the control.:) I also created a little "thingie" and put it on the clipboard to try the clipboard border and picots. It worked great. I love the layering feature mainly for the editing purposes. I think it will be very useful in the complex designs. I also love the form-form feature as we can change our attributes there instantly. I do need some practice to get use to the keyboard commands but overall, I think, I've got the logic of the program. . One thing I could not make to work (as I wanted to) were the fan fills and the fills from the clipboard. They all came out distorted. Sorry Marion, but I did not read your manual yet (just the help file within the program) and I was going to ask you and the all group of users where I should be starting to dig in to that feature. If I want to be honest that feature was the main reason for purchasing this program.(although I find it to be much neater program than I expected.) I love the idea to create my own fills from the clipboard, Sorry if this was discussed before. Did not go through my mail yet (and probably never will-completely) Help!! Please give me some hint. I think I need to understand on what criteria the fan fill works. Is it in the manual.? I have to admit that I am not very good in reading them (manuals). I did not try to import any foreign formats (or converted) files in. I believe the program was not build based on that idea and it must be very difficult to predict what it will do as we do not know how the original designs were digitized. I might try it sometime in the future but not before I will be fully "fluent" in Thred as the digitizing program. Now I have to try to digitize something useful and try to stitch it as well. Thank you Alfie and Marion for creating such a neat program and giving it to us for such a reasonable price. My last question: are we still using both lists (egroups and quiltropolis) or are we migrating more towards one or the other? Where should we post? Is it OK to cross-post? OK that are 2 questions :)) Good night all. I don't do much lettering and I suppose I was hoping someone would know more than I do. When I do lettering, I make a bitmap in Corel Draw or Windows Paint. Save it as a 24 bit color, or black ad white .bmp file. Load that, using "File/load bitmap". Lithograph Light is a casual font, and if you are making it fairly small you should be able to make satin lines instead of having to fill the letters, and outline them both. I'd try using "convert to ribbon", first- on one letter. See if you can make it work for you. Set your stitch spacing to .17 or so- it needs to be dense this one. If I were using perpendicular satin I'd use a setting more like .28. Then make a line form that follows the letter down the middle. Select it and "Edit/convert to satin ribbon". Then you will need to mess with the angles by dragging the "D" lines, to get the stitches to fill the curves. If that's gives you tryuble , try re-reading what I wrote in the instructions about how I did the gardenia appliqué. I talked about that kind of satin stitch there. Maybe that will help. Then, if you have specific questions, we're right here on the other side of your screen. If anyone has a better idea, or even another idea- tell us, please. Alfie > "Y. You've missed a lot of discussion on the subject of clipboard fills. If you could find time to visit the Thredheads list and read the back messages it might help- although they're probably in your computer. Trouble with that is winnowing out the stuff you want. Thredtalk has archives, but when I asked Beth Ober about searching them, she said they aren't searchable yet. They have changed a lot of their list details lately. I like the changes, and suspect that the archives will soon be ready. But that's up to Mike and Beth. So you don't like the squeezed ends on the clipboard fill- most of us agree. Marion was working on the chopped off version when I decided we needed to get to market and finish that later. There has to be some way to handle the left over part of a clip when the form isn't evenly divisible by the size of the clip. He did the squeezed version. Now we want the cut off version- so he's started to work on it again. However- it won't be one of those he can do over night. It's likely to be a couple weeks work, and there are some other irons in the fire, so no telling how long it will actually be. However, he is working on it now. Meanwhile, learning to use Fan fill is one way around the problem of squeezed clipboard fills. If you use "D" lines on two equal length sides of a form and then fill it with a clipboard fill, the fill will not taper at the ends. This is one where a few minutes with the "Help" files can save a lot of frustration. "D" lines are made by selecting your form point, then Hitting "D"- the cursor changes and you can left click at the other end of the side you want to make "nonsititch". I call them Teflon lines, despite the danger of getting into trouble with Teflon. No stitches will attach to a "D" line. You can see they're different, because the line is gray and fat. One good way to learn about those lines is to make a line form with three or more points. Right click to select it and then choose, "Edit/Convert to Satin ribbon" The line becomes a fat caterpillar with segments- the segments and end lines are "D" lines. They determine the angel of the satin stitches, and if you should delete the end "D" line, the ribbon gets a point instead of a chopped off end. (Lie I mentioned to Yvonne- the gardenia freebie lesson will help you get this concept- I hope). You can use stitches from other programs, but unless they are in PCD, you may have to convert the file so you can open it in Thred and put the selected stitches on the clipboard using "Control C, or X". Thred recognizes PCD's clipboard, but PED doesn't' do it the same way. YOu can use the stitches once you get them onto the clipboard though. Another exercise is to make a square and fill it with fan fill- set your fill spacing at 2 mm so you can see it easily, and make the fill ends square. Then make a "D" line on two sides. Delete one line and make another so that two touch on the corners instead of opposing each other. Watch what happens in the fill. It's quite noticeable and easy to understand. Then you can use the same square with the "D" lines and fill it with clipboard fill. Oh, I'll bet you haven't found Vanessa's videos yet.. That will help, I'm sure. http://www.ayeone.com/ayeone_world.htm That ought to keep you busy for a while. Lynne A lynnea@d... 282 From: Caroline Date: Sat Nov 18, 2000 3:31pm Subject: Re: Starting point, and jumps <<>> Lynne, as far as I understand it from the manual, and watching it, all forms, no matter what angle, are filled vertically - Thred, behind the scenes, rotates to vertical, fills from the left, then rotates back. The final stitching goes around the edge back to the Form Zero Point. This can be set by selecting the form point (mouse cursor over point and "Y"), and click Edit (menu bar) / Set / Form Zero Point. Try changing the angle fill to the 'opposite' angle, for example 45°, change it to the 'opposite' angle of 225°. That sometimes helps. Another thing to order fills - make sure that your forms are in correct sequence number (select form, "/" changes number). Then press Shift F3 (edit / sort / by form) to order the forms in color then sequence. That is what I do. When you've got everything in correct sequence, if you've still got long stitches, as a final touch up, see if you can bury them, using the space bar to add stitches along the stich line between the forms. It's "Edit/set/form zero point" Hold the cursor near the desired point, and hit "Y" to slect it, then "Edit/set/form zero point", and it will become the new beginning. About the long jumps and the border first... That sounds like it could be because of the problem of figuring out where the fills end, if I understand what you mean. I usually come along between the fill and border and insert a line of stitches by hand. Your method sounds workable though, and maybe better. Did the result look OK? I suspect you may need to move the stitches into a different order, rather than moving the forms. If you select the point where you want them to go, then use "Edit/set/order mark", or hit the "." key (period), it will make your mark. Then select the stitches you want moved and hit ";" (semicolon) or click "Edit/move to/mark". Thred owners can just go to the Downloads page and download the self-installing demo version and run the install program (thrdinst.exe) and you should be upgraded. With this version, you now have the option of exact or even stitch spacing on line borders. Even spacing was the old way, and exact spacing is the new way. Because more people seemed to want exact spacing, I made that the default, so if you want to keep the even spacing, go to "view/Set/Line border spacing", and set it to "even". The new way will make your stitches exactly the size set in the "Preferences/User stitch length", but there may be tiny odd sized stitches on the end. You can now control whether you have underlay in satin or appliqué borders. Set Satin Uunderlay to "on" or "off" on the Preferences menu. You can also set or remove underlay on satin borders by changing entries on the form-form. Just to give you an idea of how this works from the programmers point of view, I had to change 114 references to a certain variable in the code to make this happen. I am hoping I did it right in every instance, and it seems to work, but.... :). The grid is now variable in millimeters. Once again, the option is on the Preferences menu. Various minor bugs are fixed. Please let us know if you find any problems. Hi Everyone, First let me say a big thank you to Alfie and Marion for hosting these support groups. And another big thank you to Vanessa and Caroline for the videos and lessons. They were great and helped me to get started!! :)) I especially was able to create a good sewout of Caroline's Celtic design. :)) I have saved many notes also but don't recall reading about what is happening to my design. Well, I have been trying some outline designs with the bean stitch and have not been very successful yet so I put that aside and decided to do a "stylized deer" that I had a bmp for. The first deer I stitched out looks pretty good. I used density .25, satin width 2.0, tapered ends. When I did it there wasn't an underlay option at that width. I thought it looked okay when I sewed it out but decided I wanted to refill it with satin width 3.0. (By the way, I was even able to find the sort by form command after I filled it to put it back in the order I laid down with the form for how I wanted my jump stitches to work!!) Well, I opened my first deer in the .THR format, used the box select and the unfill command, changed my preferences and refilled with: border; perpendicular from the fill menu. Well, I went to stitch it out and it now has stitches all the way down the row of satin stitches. I double checked the stitch length in PCD and they are all around 1.5. So, instead of a nice smooth satin stitch 3mm wide I have a double row of satin stitches 1.5 wide. I double checked in PCD by doing a quick a-fill and placing the stitches about 3.5mm apart and there is no automatic line in the middle. I didn't think there was but I wanted to be sure. Help!! Please, does anyone have an answer? I can't think of where to look. I know I probably missed something in my reading but what? Oh dear, I hope I've explained this clearly!! :)) TIA, Earla Miles in Dundas, Ontario, Canada. 298 From: Caroline Date: Tue Nov 21, 2000 6:25pm Subject: Re: What am I doing Wrong? <<>> Earla, I can't picture exactly what you're doing, but it sounds as if the maximum stitch size might be too small? If you did please send me another e-mail. Much appreciated. Debora If someone can help me, I would appreciate it. I downloaded a bmp file, made forms, used fill (vertical & horizontal) with different colors on layer 1. This is my problem, when I tried to use the fill/border/line to create a black outline around the forms that are filled with either vertical or horizontal (colors other than black), Thred changes my filled areas to black. And then if I try an area already filled in black, when I choose fill/border/line, it changes the form filled from vertical to just the line showing. I want the design filled in with various colors with it outlined in black. For design outline what should I use Line or bean? And do I need to go around the design twice - by coping the forms onto another layer to create this effect? Line - simple line of stitches. Bean - single line of triple stitches. (I'm not sure what this means either.) Sure would help to see a picture of this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Debora P.S.
