Hi Gerri, Welcome, brave soul. When you say programmed fills, are you talking about what we call Clipboard fills, where you put some group of stitches on the Windows clipboard and use it in a repeated pattern to fill the design area? You can do that in PCD Win by pasting each one manually. Thred will do it automatically, although the present clipboard fill will squeeze the design to fit it into curves and corners. It is a variation of the fan fill. If you wanted to make a design with a row of repeated motifs, or even words behind a main figure you might do it by making a square form, and then make a "D" line on both ends, the fill it with the clipboard fill. One line will fill in the up direction and one line will fill in the down direction, which may not be what you want. But it will make straight lines of fill. Yes, until Marion writes a new program from the ground up, we will make upgrades available on the website for free download as they are written. > > 4) How often is the program upgraded? That is a hard one to pin down. Frequently- it depends on how much of our time is spent on business details, and if there are any problems for which he needs to write a bug fix. Usually it's a few weeks, but once in a while it's more frequent. When I can find time to digitize, or when he does, we tend to get those flashes of inspiration that lead to new features. We're trying ot wean our selves of this because it's hard to ship packages of disks and manuals to vendors if we keep adding new features. But it sure is fun. > > 5) I understand that designs done in Thred, with the Thred format, are > convertable to HUS format using BuzzTools. Is this correct? You must save the design as DST or PCS and then convert to HUS. No format but THR will keep your form information. Form information is what allows the program to do things like refill a form after you move the form points- or let you change the fill and/or border type automatically. > 6 How many colors does this program permit the user to incorporate? And, > what type of color pallette is used? You should look at the demo version for this one- it's hard to put into words. There are 16 color change boxes. Adding more than 16 colors would make some sewing machines refuse to stitch the designs. You can make your own colors using the Windows Color dialog box. If you are familiar with Windows Paint or other graphics programs this will be something you have done. Also, you use the same dialog box when you change the settings on your Windows desktop. Right click on the desktop, then Properties, then Appearance, click on the little box labeled Color- then Other and you are at the WIndows color dialog box. When you drag that arrow around you make colors- if you put the X in a box on the Thred color bar, then make a color, Thred will define that color number as the color you made. It takes forever to tell you, but it's a cinch to do. -- Alfie McCoskey, Chico, CA mailto:mmcky@p... http://www.thredworks.com/ 5 From: Shirley A. I am a new digitizer as well as new to Thred. My question is this: When digitizing a design, how do I set the stitches that connect the parts of the design so they will be where I want them to be? Presently, I usually use three layers to make my design. One layer for the underlay, another for the desired fill, and another for the finished design. I can't get the traveling stitches where I want them to be. Any suggestions welcomed. I do agree that the instructions weren't written for beginners such as I am. That is one thing I told Alfie early on, so I do not mean this as criticism. I think the accomplished digitizer finds it sometimes finds it difficult to get down to the beginners level. The first thing that I needed to figure out was the layers. I could make a form by any of the methods, but couldn't make an underlay for it without changing the finished fill. I found out that you need to open the bitmap (it will show on all layers, go to layer 1 (I have been doing my construction on layers 1,2,3, and transferring the finished form to 4. I create the shape I want, on layer 1. Copy that form to layer 2. I then go back to layer 1 and create an underlay and move that to layer 4. I then go to layer 2, right click on the form I transferred there and put the final fill into the form. I then move that to layer 4. I repeat this with each section of the design until I am finished filling it. I don't worry about colors until later, usually using the sequence on the color bar. Alfie, I know I am showing my ignorance, but you have to start somewhere. I am hoping you will jump in here and correct any mistakes I am making. I am definitely still struggling, both with the program and with my lack of knowledge of digitizing. 10 From: Thred Customer Service Date: Wed Oct 25, 2000 8:53am Subject: Re: thred program Tzigane1@a... wrote: Hi I have a couple of questions. I think you have textured fills- we don't. But I understand our bean stitch border is better than PED's way of stitching around the outline three times. Several of our features are unique to Thred, so far as I know. We've been too busy writing and testing to buy and learn the competition. I've created a user's group mailing list- see Thredheads link below. I hope people who own the other programs will answer your questions, but you can learn a lot by downloading the program and trying it free. However, you can't save a file until you buy the "key". All my for sale designs and most of the free ones were made using Thred, so you can download the THR files and open them in the demo, which will give you something to mess around with and watch the results. -- Alfie McCoskey, Chico, CA mailto:mmcky@p... http://www.thredworks.com/ 11 From: Alfie McCoskey Date: Wed Oct 25, 2000 10:01am Subject: Re: Getting Started- step 1, step 2... The downside of this is that if you have two of these forms right on top of another, you can't see them. There is a discussion of this in "A word about Thred colors" in the help files. However, that section says that forms on different layers are different "colors" so you should be able to see them if they are on top of one another. Well, I just tried that and it didn't work, so I will immediately try to find out why and fix it for the next release. I don't think there is anything wrong with program, as I see it now. No, the design doesn't disappear when I select Preferences. There's lots of RAM on my new Compaq and I do have version 1.025 Thred. The problem I had with seeing layers, I think, was because I couldn't tell that I was actually looking at the BMP only and that the form had disappeared from the layer. I'm going to make the BMP a color that I will recognize as such. I believe I was deleting, somehow, the forms. One question here: Does the BMP get copied or moved with the form to the other layers when you copy or move? You wrote: "Yes. I just loaded the .THR file from the tutorial, and I can definitely see different parts of the design when I click on different layers. Have you tried loading the finished design and clicking on the different layers? Remember that anything that is moved to layer zero is visible on all layers." Is this right? I had nothing on layer 'all". When I added the small hexagon to layer 2 and the large hexagon to layer 4, I right clicked with the mouse, and then I went to layer 'all' and there were the two new forms I'd just added to 2 & 4. Layer 1 & 3 had the small hexagons previous to that, but they didn't show up in layer 'all'. What is it I don't understand here?? I tried deleting the 2 forms on layer all and that deleted the forms on layers 2 & 4 but not 2 & 3. The instructions say "Once you have a form on each layer except layer 'all', begin to fill them." The downside of this is that if you have two of these forms right on top of another, you can't see them. There is a discussion of this in "A word about Thred colors" in the help files. However, that section says that forms on different layers are different "colors" so you should be able to see them if they are on top of one another. Well, I just tried that and it didn't work, so I will immediately try to find out why and fix it for the next release. I have already put in a "layer button" which will tell you what layer forms or stitches are on if you have one selected. That will be released after we have had a chance to test it a bit more. I like the fact that you are providing some method of encrypting a designer code into the design. But I have a few questions. I have opened up one of your designs in both .dst and .thr format. The title bar shows "roseclip by" with either format. But, if a design was made with Thred, then the design was given to someone with a different software, would this "encryption" remain or disappear, if they adjusted the design and resaved? Also, if the original design made with Thred was given to another person with Thred, and the design was a adjusted using Thred, what would the title bar then read ? I wish I could see what you're doing when you try to select a stitch. You may want to change the "stitch box cutoff" on the "Preferences" . That number is how many times you have to hit "Z" or the "In" to Zoom before you see your stitch boxes. I don't like to see them unless I need them, so I change it while I work. If you are having trouble selecting a stitch because you get a form point instead- turn off the forms by clicking on "Frm+/-" before you edit stitches. When you click it again, it will turn them back on. Then you can select stitches several ways. Left drag on a stitch box and drag it where you want it to go. If you hold the cursor close to the stitch box and hit the "C" key it will put the mouse cursor on the stitch, hold the "shift" key and the use the arrow keys to move through forward or back. It will add to or subtract from the selection. > Is their main use to control where the stitches go > that go from one form to the other? or when do you > use the "set stitch" option. When you digitize in PCD_Win or any software, it is best to start from the background and move forward, doing all of one color at a time. I think what may have happened is that you did the background or underlay after you did the foreground. Also if you used the "length mirror" command, you will need to use the "flip order" command after or it will cause it to sew with the underlay first. Thred should be done in the order you want to sew it out also. Another problem could happen if you use the same color in two different areas and then choose the "sort color" command. For instance lets say you had a car with black tires and then used red for the car and, yellow for the headlights, etc and came back and chose black for the outline you would not want to use the "sort color" command on it because the black would all sew at the same time. You would want to change one of the colors before sorting. I never used the sort command unless it is on a poorly digitized design that I just have to sew just for this reason. It changes the routing of all your jump stitches and requires more thread cutting. However I have found one great use for the command. If you have several small designs that you put together in one screen that are several colors, this is a great way to not have to change thread for each one. I have some Celtic designs that I use three or so to put across a pocket that have a main color and an outline color and this works great. For instance, the foot was color 1, the outside leg was color 4, underside color 3, etc. When I use PCD to sort the colors so they would stitch out together, that was when portions of the design underlay would wind up stitching on top of the top fill. When I stitched in the order that I had digitized, using many color changes, it would stitch out correctly. I am so sorry; I am probably making this as "clear as mud" with my non-technical mind! I don't know what color you might have in your background- so it's hard to say what color you actually see in your screen. You say "I have set stitches all around a "dove" ". Unlike PCD, Thred uses forms, not stitches, to fill. So what you need to do is select a form type, either line or free hand. Then, left click around your bitmap. Right click at the end. That should get you out of the mode for setting form points and leave the form selected. Then go to "fill" and select your choices for fill and/or border/. "I then select all forms and stitches in the edit menu". "Select all forms and stitches" is for when you want to move the whole design or something. When you want to select your form you should right click on a form node, or you can hit "escape", then walk through the forms using the arrow keys. If you hit "escape" to make sure nothing is selected, then hit the "up" arrow , it takes your to the first form, then each time you hit "Up", it moves you to the next one. One of those methods ought to work for you. Let us know how it works out.
