Hi Gerri, Welcome, brave soul. When you say programmed fills, are you talking about what we call Clipboard fills, where you put some group of stitches on the Windows clipboard and use it in a repeated pattern to fill the design area? You can do that in PCD Win by pasting each one manually. Thred will do it automatically, although the present clipboard fill will squeeze the design to fit it into curves and corners. It is a variation of the fan fill. If you wanted to make a design with a row of repeated motifs, or even words behind a main figure you might do it by making a square form, and then make a "D" line on both ends, the fill it with the clipboard fill. One line will fill in the up direction and one line will fill in the down direction, which may not be what you want. But it will make straight lines of fill. Yes, until Marion writes a new program from the ground up, we will make upgrades available on the website for free download as they are written. > > 4) How often is the program upgraded? That is a hard one to pin down. Frequently- it depends on how much of our time is spent on business details, and if there are any problems for which he needs to write a bug fix. Usually it's a few weeks, but once in a while it's more frequent. When I can find time to digitize, or when he does, we tend to get those flashes of inspiration that lead to new features. We're trying ot wean our selves of this because it's hard to ship packages of disks and manuals to vendors if we keep adding new features. But it sure is fun. > > 5) I understand that designs done in Thred, with the Thred format, are > convertable to HUS format using BuzzTools. Is this correct? You must save the design as DST or PCS and then convert to HUS. No format but THR will keep your form information. Form information is what allows the program to do things like refill a form after you move the form points- or let you change the fill and/or border type automatically. > 6 How many colors does this program permit the user to incorporate? And, > what type of color pallette is used? You should look at the demo version for this one- it's hard to put into words. There are 16 color change boxes. Adding more than 16 colors would make some sewing machines refuse to stitch the designs. You can make your own colors using the Windows Color dialog box. If you are familiar with Windows Paint or other graphics programs this will be something you have done. Also, you use the same dialog box when you change the settings on your Windows desktop. Right click on the desktop, then Properties, then Appearance, click on the little box labeled Color- then Other and you are at the WIndows color dialog box. When you drag that arrow around you make colors- if you put the X in a box on the Thred color bar, then make a color, Thred will define that color number as the color you made. It takes forever to tell you, but it's a cinch to do. -- Alfie McCoskey, Chico, CA mailto:mmcky@p... http://www.thredworks.com/ 5 From: Shirley A. I am a new digitizer as well as new to Thred. My question is this: When digitizing a design, how do I set the stitches that connect the parts of the design so they will be where I want them to be? Presently, I usually use three layers to make my design. One layer for the underlay, another for the desired fill, and another for the finished design. I can't get the traveling stitches where I want them to be. Any suggestions welcomed. I do agree that the instructions weren't written for beginners such as I am. That is one thing I told Alfie early on, so I do not mean this as criticism. I think the accomplished digitizer finds it sometimes finds it difficult to get down to the beginners level. The first thing that I needed to figure out was the layers. I could make a form by any of the methods, but couldn't make an underlay for it without changing the finished fill. I found out that you need to open the bitmap (it will show on all layers, go to layer 1 (I have been doing my construction on layers 1,2,3, and transferring the finished form to 4. I create the shape I want, on layer 1. Copy that form to layer 2. I then go back to layer 1 and create an underlay and move that to layer 4. I then go to layer 2, right click on the form I transferred there and put the final fill into the form. I then move that to layer 4. I repeat this with each section of the design until I am finished filling it. I don't worry about colors until later, usually using the sequence on the color bar. Alfie, I know I am showing my ignorance, but you have to start somewhere. I am hoping you will jump in here and correct any mistakes I am making. I am definitely still struggling, both with the program and with my lack of knowledge of digitizing. 10 From: Thred Customer Service Date: Wed Oct 25, 2000 8:53am Subject: Re: thred program Tzigane1@a... wrote: Hi I have a couple of questions. I think you have textured fills- we don't. But I understand our bean stitch border is better than PED's way of stitching around the outline three times. Several of our features are unique to Thred, so far as I know. We've been too busy writing and testing to buy and learn the competition. I've created a user's group mailing list- see Thredheads link below. I hope people who own the other programs will answer your questions, but you can learn a lot by downloading the program and trying it free. However, you can't save a file until you buy the "key". All my for sale designs and most of the free ones were made using Thred, so you can download the THR files and open them in the demo, which will give you something to mess around with and watch the results. -- Alfie McCoskey, Chico, CA mailto:mmcky@p... http://www.thredworks.com/ 11 From: Alfie McCoskey Date: Wed Oct 25, 2000 10:01am Subject: Re: Getting Started- step 1, step 2... The downside of this is that if you have two of these forms right on top of another, you can't see them. There is a discussion of this in "A word about Thred colors" in the help files. However, that section says that forms on different layers are different "colors" so you should be able to see them if they are on top of one another. Well, I just tried that and it didn't work, so I will immediately try to find out why and fix it for the next release. I don't think there is anything wrong with program, as I see it now. No, the design doesn't disappear when I select Preferences. There's lots of RAM on my new Compaq and I do have version 1.025 Thred. The problem I had with seeing layers, I think, was because I couldn't tell that I was actually looking at the BMP only and that the form had disappeared from the layer. I'm going to make the BMP a color that I will recognize as such. I believe I was deleting, somehow, the forms. One question here: Does the BMP get copied or moved with the form to the other layers when you copy or move? You wrote: "Yes. I just loaded the .THR file from the tutorial, and I can definitely see different parts of the design when I click on different layers. Have you tried loading the finished design and clicking on the different layers? Remember that anything that is moved to layer zero is visible on all layers." Is this right? I had nothing on layer 'all". When I added the small hexagon to layer 2 and the large hexagon to layer 4, I right clicked with the mouse, and then I went to layer 'all' and there were the two new forms I'd just added to 2 & 4. Layer 1 & 3 had the small hexagons previous to that, but they didn't show up in layer 'all'. What is it I don't understand here?? I tried deleting the 2 forms on layer all and that deleted the forms on layers 2 & 4 but not 2 & 3. The instructions say "Once you have a form on each layer except layer 'all', begin to fill them." The downside of this is that if you have two of these forms right on top of another, you can't see them. There is a discussion of this in "A word about Thred colors" in the help files. However, that section says that forms on different layers are different "colors" so you should be able to see them if they are on top of one another. Well, I just tried that and it didn't work, so I will immediately try to find out why and fix it for the next release. I have already put in a "layer button" which will tell you what layer forms or stitches are on if you have one selected. That will be released after we have had a chance to test it a bit more. I like the fact that you are providing some method of encrypting a designer code into the design. But I have a few questions. I have opened up one of your designs in both .dst and .thr format. The title bar shows "roseclip by" with either format. But, if a design was made with Thred, then the design was given to someone with a different software, would this "encryption" remain or disappear, if they adjusted the design and resaved? Also, if the original design made with Thred was given to another person with Thred, and the design was a adjusted using Thred, what would the title bar then read ? I wish I could see what you're doing when you try to select a stitch. You may want to change the "stitch box cutoff" on the "Preferences" . That number is how many times you have to hit "Z" or the "In" to Zoom before you see your stitch boxes. I don't like to see them unless I need them, so I change it while I work. If you are having trouble selecting a stitch because you get a form point instead- turn off the forms by clicking on "Frm+/-" before you edit stitches. When you click it again, it will turn them back on. Then you can select stitches several ways. Left drag on a stitch box and drag it where you want it to go. If you hold the cursor close to the stitch box and hit the "C" key it will put the mouse cursor on the stitch, hold the "shift" key and the use the arrow keys to move through forward or back. It will add to or subtract from the selection. > Is their main use to control where the stitches go > that go from one form to the other? or when do you > use the "set stitch" option. When you digitize in PCD_Win or any software, it is best to start from the background and move forward, doing all of one color at a time. I think what may have happened is that you did the background or underlay after you did the foreground. Also if you used the "length mirror" command, you will need to use the "flip order" command after or it will cause it to sew with the underlay first. Thred should be done in the order you want to sew it out also. Another problem could happen if you use the same color in two different areas and then choose the "sort color" command. For instance lets say you had a car with black tires and then used red for the car and, yellow for the headlights, etc and came back and chose black for the outline you would not want to use the "sort color" command on it because the black would all sew at the same time. You would want to change one of the colors before sorting. I never used the sort command unless it is on a poorly digitized design that I just have to sew just for this reason. It changes the routing of all your jump stitches and requires more thread cutting. However I have found one great use for the command. If you have several small designs that you put together in one screen that are several colors, this is a great way to not have to change thread for each one. I have some Celtic designs that I use three or so to put across a pocket that have a main color and an outline color and this works great. For instance, the foot was color 1, the outside leg was color 4, underside color 3, etc. When I use PCD to sort the colors so they would stitch out together, that was when portions of the design underlay would wind up stitching on top of the top fill. I don't know what color you might have in your background- so it's hard to say what color you actually see in your screen. You say "I have set stitches all around a "dove" ". Unlike PCD, Thred uses forms, not stitches, to fill. So what you need to do is select a form type, either line or free hand. Then, left click around your bitmap. Right click at the end. That should get you out of the mode for setting form points and leave the form selected. Then go to "fill" and select your choices for fill and/or border/. "I then select all forms and stitches in the edit menu". "Select all forms and stitches" is for when you want to move the whole design or something. When you want to select your form you should right click on a form node, or you can hit "escape", then walk through the forms using the arrow keys. If you hit "escape" to make sure nothing is selected, then hit the "up" arrow , it takes your to the first form, then each time you hit "Up", it moves you to the next one. A line form is especially good for is the "Edit/convert to satin ribbon" feature. That's my favorite way of doing satin stitch. It makes what is actually a fan fill (so you need to be sure your Preferences are set so that your stitch length is long enough- I usually make the max stitch length 9 mm). Thred will automatically convert a line or polygon form to the other type if you should happen to select a feature that only works for the type other than what your started with. They are setting up a "private" list for us over there. That doesn't mean we're keeping anyone out. It will be open to anyone who is interested in Thred and digitizing embroidery. It does mean we won't have problems if we say something that might be called advertising. Since we "own" the list we can tell you when we update the program or talk about prices without getting into trouble. I think we might have less problem with worms and viruses if we do that, and I like their privacy policy better. We can keep both running lists if you'd like, and see which we like better. There are some people who just won't use a list from this site. I'm not eager to give up copyright of any material put up for download on the Files page here at EGroups either. Read the fine print in "Terms of use". I don't have a link for you yet, nor an address, but I will be sending it as soon as they get it ready for us. But I'm going to send this to the Thredheads list, as well as to you so other beginners can share it. You can join the list by clicking on the line in my signature. >>>I am trying to digitize a simple design with stems, a few leaves and 2 roses. <<< First, you should figure out what part of the design ought to stitch first. Then think about where you want the second section to start, and so forth. Once you have an idea what comes where in the stitching order, you can create the first form. You probably want a leaf first, so you can hide your connecting stitches along the stem and cover them with the stem satin stitches after you fill all of the leaves. The leaves are probably filled and outlined, so you want a free hand form for them. For practice you might try making a design using the "Regular Polygon" form for your leaves, because you don't have to click each spot of the outline. You could make a 4-sided shape and then squeeze it with the side boxes of the selection box, or drag form points until it looks OK. Once you have a form, select it and the "Fill" from the top menu. It should fill right up. (There are issues about what fill, but for learning, just pick one you like and worry about how to make a really god design after you have learned to make any design.) Then use "Add" and left click to make a connecting stitches that hide under the place where you will have stem satin stitches. You could create one leaf and then use "Control C" to copy it, and "Control V" to paste it and put in where you want the second and third leaves. Then you might want to make a line form for your stem, and since you are just learning, use either "Fill/Border/Perpendicular satin" or "Fill/Border/angle satin" to fill it. Once you have a leaves and a stem, write back and I'll give you some more steps. But as homework, how about going to the Free Rose Bud and reading what I wrote about how I did that design? http://www.thredworks.com/freros.htm http://www.thredworks.com/linkal.htm The free design is on that top link, and you can read the description on-line. You could have your copy of Thred open and be walking through the design while you read what I wrote. It's a simple design very like what you describe. Or you could work off-line and take your time. The bottom link is to the description file (as a zipped Word file), or you can simply save it using your browser, without having to download and unzip. It tells you how to see what I did. Use "Up to" and walk through the design slowly. (Hold your cursor close to a stitch at the area you want to look at and hit "C", or right click on the stitch. That selects the stitch, then left click on "Up To" on the left hand side of the screen. You'll see the process- then you can ask any specific questions after you've tried a few things. Remember to take a break outside and work up a little sweat between sessions of working with Thred. You need to keep your circulation moving, and it helps to work off the tension from thinking so hard. Alf Mary Pozdnekoff wrote: Hi Alfie, I am having problems getting started with the Thred program. I did say "nearly all" the free designs were done in Thred. I knew I was going ot get caught. But I like that hummer and I wanted him to circulate. You can tell it was done in PCD because of the line of base stitches up the satin stitch areas. I hate those because they're so likely to break the thread. A design that hasn't got a single form in it probably wasn't done in Thred- but then, it may be the forms were deleted. The grid comes into play as you zoom in. On the preferences menu there is a "Grid cutoff" entry that allows you to set the number of times you zoom before the grid cuts in. It's currently fixed at one grid line for every Pfaff stitch point. > I see a need for the ability to line up border style > designs > and others with a background grid. To line up forms or groups of stitches, put a mark ("M" key), to provide the reference for lining up the selected objects. Select a form or a group of stitches and then hit "Shift/ Minus" to move the selected object horizontally to the mark or "Control/ Minus" to move it vertically to the mark. That's the minus sign key which is next to the plus sign key on top right of the regular keyboard, not the one on the number keypad. That other minus sign- on the number keypad- will toggle the "Up To" on and off.. There is also a function that will center a selection on top of another object. Select the first one, which will be the one centered ON, then select the one to be on top of that one, and hit the "L" key. This is very handy when you use the Regular Polygon forms to make geometric designs. I had to get Marion to remind me how the grid works, but I remembered the other ones- so, see, I'm still learning too. I have found out a few interesting thing about it since then. It attaches to your signature in Outlook Express, if you have one. Then it gives that odd message below when you click on it that doesn't really spell out the fact that it is a virus. Be sure if you are running Windows ME to have a virus program that is especially for ME . That was why my virus software didn't alert me. I have Norton 2000 and had to get 2001. Someone mentioned looking for attachments, but this one doesn't come in the form of an attachment since it hides in your signature. Someone wrote to me thinking my last letter was still infected because it had a bunch of characters after it in the digest but I believe that was because I forgot to delete the fancy ad that egroup puts at the bottom and she received the digest which turns all that fancy html back into text. This is called a KAK virus. It is not deadly. You may get a message that there is a virus or a message that says" An Active X control on this page might be unsafe to interact with other parts of the page, etc. etc" Say "no" and delete the letter. VBS.KakWorm spreads using Microsoft Outlook Express. It attaches itself to all outgoing messages via the Signature feature of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer newsgroup reader. The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole so that a viral file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system. Microsoft has patched this security hole. The patch is available from Microsoft's website. If you have a patched version of Outlook Express, this worm will not work automatically. Here is the address http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.html and it will tell you what to do. Supposedly it is a worm that attacks security leaks in Outlook Express that are below 5.0 but mine is 5.5 and it still caused problems. I have Windows ME installed so maybe it works differently. They say if you use another mail program it is not a problem but play it safe and check out the above url. (an adventure in it's own way, too) We've called the phone company to see if they will set up another phone line for a FAX, but there is a waiting list, so it will be a little while. Sorry. Is that available yet. >> I wrote the getting started tutorial in response to one such request, but that may have been more than "some time ago". We hope to make the tutorials and manuals better as time goes on, but we have been overwhelmed by handling orders for the last couple of weeks. We hope to have more time to devote to improving things after the price goes up, but if we don't, then we'll probably have the means to hire some help. Anyway, we always appreciate help from users in setting our priorities. Ideally, you should be able to ask a program how to do anything you want to do and it should tell you in simple terms that you can understand. I guess we all realize that even Microsoft, with a budget greater than many countries, falls far short of that ideal. There is a fundamental sort of mathematical or information theory reason for that. Think of it as the difference between a dictionary and an encyclopedia. The current state of help in Thred is like a dictionary. We only have definitions of words, when we need to understand it as a language. We want to turn it into an encyclopedia, and even a living expert. The encyclopedia is a lot bigger and harder to write than the dictionary, and the living expert has trillions of brain cells whose functions we only dimly understand. We've spent the last twenty months writing the program and testing it. We haven't had much time left over for writing tutorials. but we will keep working on it. The program is too new to have a lot of books written about it yet. Maybe some the member of this list will be the one to write one. I'm eager to see Vanessa's videos. But just because it's a difficult problem doesn't mean we won't do our best with what resources we have. << Saw some freebie designs too. How do I download the manual and tutorials? I can open on line . but could see no instructions on how to download it and my friend is not here right now. >> On the left hand side of all the Thredworks.com screens at the bottom of the stack of green buttons is a button with downloads written on it. Just left-click on the items in that list and your browser will download them for you. Note that you need to right click the PDF items or the browser will open the file online. After you have unzipped the HTML downloads you can browse them with your browser just as if you were online. << I need forms? >> You don't have to use forms. You can set and edit stitches without using forms, but forms make the process much faster and easier, once you have learned how to use them. >> what are forms? << Think of forms as virtual frames for holding stitches and allowing you to easily change or move them in groups. << where do I get forms? >> When you open Thred, right under your name is the main menu bar. You can left click on various items on the menu bar to tell Thred what you want to do. Third from the left, it says "form". Left click on this word and you will get another menu asking you what kind of form you want. There are detailed explanations in the "Help" file. You could, for example, hit "Help" on the main menu bar, and when the help comes up, then hold down the "control key" an hit "F" at the same time. You will get a dialog box asking you what you want to search for. Type in "form" and click on "find next" and you can find the first reference to form in the user's manual. Click on "find next" again and find the next one, etc. << I simply want an easy way to make appliqués on the Bro8500 with largest hoop (3position) I have a coloring book type of outline designs I want to appliqué. >> Here is the general outline of what you need to do. If your "coloring book outline" is on paper, you need to get it scanned into a bitmap. If it is already a bitmap, you need to make sure it is either a black and white bitmap or a 24 bit color bitmap. If the outline is stitches in PES file format, you can convert it to PCS using Buzz Tools or Embird and open the PCS file in Thred and convert the stitches into a form. Alternatively, you can just use a freehand form and draw the outline you want. When you have the form, you want to select it and fill it with an appliqué border fill and you are done. If, after you fill the form, you would like to change its shape, just move the form points by dragging them with your mouse and Thred will recalculate all the stitches for you. Learning a new program is painful, even for experts with years of experience. If you are learning both the program and how to use a computer, it is a challenge. I like to think of it like the space shuttle taking off. At first there is a lot of noise, vibration, and discomfort, and the ship moves really slowly, but after a successful launch, it will fly higher and smoother than any bird. Thanks for your feedback. Marion 101 From: Marion Date: Sat Oct 28, 2000 10:53pm Subject: QUEST: clipboard fills] Hi Peri, << How about some easy 1,2,3 directions for fills from the clipboard ? >> I recommend starting with clipboard border fills. They are much simpler. You need to understand fan fills before you do regular clipboard fills because regular clipboard fills are based on fan fills. Just put some stitches on the clipboard by selecting them and hitting "control/X" or "Control/C". Then select a form and do "fill/border/clipboard". You might also be interested in trying the picot border fills which also use data from the clipboard. Also you can switch a form back and forth between line and polygon/freehand by clicking on the top button on the "form-form". The fill is quite a bit different for the line and the closed forms. In a closed form, you may get the border on the inside when you want it on the outside. Select "Edit/flip/order", and it will go to the other side. << can fills from other softwares be put on the clipboard and used? If so, how is this done >> You can import clipboard data from PCD. Just select some stitches in PCD and then hit "Control X" or "Control C". Then go to Thred and do "fill/border/clipboard". You can use stitch groups in a PCS file originally made in other software and converted to PCS then opened in Thred, by putting them on the clipboard by selecting them and hitting "control/X" or "Control/C". When I am learning a new program, which seems to be most of the time, I usually switch back and forth between reading the help files and experimenting. On that page, there is a list of hyperlinks for tutorials with the file format they are in written next to them. Marion wrote some of them, and I wrote the HexRose, and FreeRosebud tutorials. Maybe if you go back and download it again, or choose another one, you will have better luck. It might be corrupted in the download process, which sometimes happens. I would like to check that I've got the files behind the right links etc., so if you do happen to figure out the name of the file you are using, it would be nice if you could send it to me. Do you unzip your file and then open it in Word? If it's the HexRose, that is what I had expected people to do, and I think it should work. You need to get the Design file too- it has images and clip files in it too. We are both trying to find time to write more, but it won't be likely until after the 31st. It's hard to write a tutorial. The Getting Started tutorial that teaches stitch editing took Marion about four days to write. The heart is now a weird green color. Did you figure out how to change the custom colors on your color bar? That long double color bar on the left side of the screen. The row on the left is for ordinal colors- it lets people who used other software continue their old system. Each color will stitch in the order it appears in, counting from the top. The next one on the right, in toward the picture, is called the "custom color bar". Left click on the box you want to change. The big Window's Color Box pops down, and you can use one of those boxes or click on "Define Custom Colors", and the other half shows That half 's the fun part. Drag the arrow pointer, or click on the spot that looks yummy. Pick your color, then click on "add to Custom Colors" and "OK". Now if anyone out there knows how to keep that stupid little box from overwriting the colors you picked let me know OK-? I suspect there is a better logic waiting to be written. But meanwhile, this really is one of MicroSoft's better ideas,( IMHO). I love those colors. Marion once said to me, "I just don't see why you care so much what color thing's are." Can you imagine? > The next puzzle was figuring out how to move on to > the next form. > Click on "Q"!! > Then click on form menu and start all over again with > another shape. > > I have the whole thing done in that manner. Use "Up to" find the place to start editing the jump stitches. It will let you see just which stitch to walk, and you will be able to avoid "walking" across a place you already filled. I can't count the times I've had to pick that sort of error out of a stitch-out and go edit it out of the design. When Marion wrote this feature, he made big points with me. If you organize your design right, you can make all the connecting stitches walk through another area not yet filled. Be sure to think about the colors you're using - black under white isn't good. It will show, so will some others. This neatness is the mark of a well done design. http://www.skytoucher.com/gbdesigns/ Glynda Black has a lot of elegant, moderate sized designs that really demonstrate that technique. Her's look good and stitch with no trouble. I have her little bees and they stitch out so neatly I had to do them about twenty times because they're so NEAT. It's fun to watch. I'm impressed by tidiness. Her designs also feel nice on the garment. Lightness matters for embroidery. Jump stitches are a nuisance. Certain truths we sewists hold self evident. > Be sure the key to saving the file is in there!!!! I > seem to have > erased it when I downloaded the newest version...what > a pain. If you had saved it one time, you could still get at the old version of the file, because Thred makes a backup and keeps it until you run "File/Delete Backups". A very common problem, and version control comes next. When you save it, it might help to keep old versions a awhile, or parts on separate designs. Use different file names every so often- you may notice that lots of my designs are named things like "designZ". That's usually because I already worked my through the alphabet making anew version every time a did something I really wasn't sure about our when I thought to myself how much I'd hate to loose all that work. Maybe you are supposed to use an external drawing package and cut/paste and then it is temporarily on the clipboard ? Or maybe my sequence is wrong? I was making something for a fill then CTRL-X, then on the same screen make a polygon with 3 sides and select it then pick clipboard fills. Or maybe I am supposed to close out that screen and start a new one while the fill sits on the clipboard. >> You should be able to ctrl-x or ctrl-c and then fill without closing the program or opening a new file or anything. The only theory I can come up with is that your clipboard object is too large for the triangle. Whatever you put on the clipboard needs to be small with respect to the form you are filling. It says that in the manual, but there should also be an error message, and there is not. I'll put it on my list. On the subject of the 3,000 stitch limit on converting stitches to forms, I just raised it to 12,000, and that will be in the next release. I hope to make it user settable and limited only by the memory of the computer, but that takes some programming I haven't gotten around to yet. There was a time when I thought no one would ever need a form with more than 100 points. Thanks for your comments. Holeless middle. Hello, .....I was wondering how to make a figure such as a donut, where the inner circle would have no stitches. Could somebody please tell me........ ______________________________________ Debora, Well, I'm stepping out on a limb here, since I am very much a "newbie" to this software myself. However I have managed to do a donut shape with a hole in the middle. I did it the same way as we do it in PCDesigner. 1) Select the Toolbar's FORM, FREE-HAND tool. 2) Click around the outside of the donut shape setting the nodes. 3) When you get to the very first node you set, jump to the inside of the donut and set nodes around this inside circle. 4) Click on Toolbar's FILL and select a fill type to fill the donut. 5) In order to get the fill to line up perfectly, you can drag the jump nodes around until the jump is the same angle as the fill (really nifty because the program refills automatically as you drag the nodes around). The program's movie feature (Toolbar's VIEW, MOVIE) shows it filling almost seamlessly. Disclaimer here. I haven't actually stitched the donut out, but sure looks like this is the way to go. 124 From: Lovina Date: Mon Oct 30, 2000 8:06am Subject: Making Donut Oophs I never was a very good cook gggg We need to add one more step after step 3!! If there is no outline, I think you need to make one. If a form has a lot of extra form nodes in it (those little boxes) it will sometimes look really weird when it fills. It's like a frame holding your fill and border, so you don't want it to be full of lines it doesn't need. To select your outline, you can zoom in close and point the cursor at the first stitch. Hit "C" and the go to "Up To" on the left side. When you click on that one, the stitches past the one you selected don't show on the screen. They are still in the design, just hidden. Then you can use the arrow keys ("Right" for forward, "Left" for reverse), to add stitches to the selection until you have the outline selected. If you just want to convert those stitches to bean you don't actually have to make them into a form, since Marion also wrote "Convert/ to bean stitch". That's under the "Edit" menu. If you want to change the shape of the outline at all, or think it may not stitch exactly right the first time, make the form. Once you convert the outline to a form you can do lots of things. If you should decide bean stitch isn't enough definition, you might easily change it to satin, etc. Alfie Peri - Summaries wrote: > Actually I was trying to bring in a design made by > a different program. I tried to make the clipboard fill behave as you describe, but it didn't do that. I'm wondering if there is something about your technique or computer system that is causing this- or if it's just a bug that only shows up under certain conditions. Those are really a bear to find, so if that's it, we want that bug, big time. So, how about a description of how you save the new stitch group to clipboard? Do you test that you actually have it with "control V" ? You can put it on the screen somewhere out of the way , and remove it again with "Control X". Or is it that you "selected all"? To get a small stitch group onto the clipboard you need to select only those stitches. You can do that by holding the cursor near a stitch and hitting "C", or by turning the forms off ("frm+/-) and clicking on any stitch. Then the arrow keys will add to a selection or subtract, as long as you keep holding the shift key. Left for backward, right for forward . (Sorry, lefties, nothing "sinister" intended ) Select all won't do it for the clipboard, that would put the entire design on the clipboard- which Thred won't do. Thred requires you to use "file/import" if you want the whole thing. So, either "Select all" would do nothing, or it might save a big thing to the clipboard, which would make the fill logic balk. If what you have on the clipboard won't fit between the form corners, Thred won't show it on the screen or put it in the design. Are you confused yet? If I ever offend someone who is becoming expert, by treating them as a beginner, please forgive me. I can't know what you know, or don't know, and if it bores you to have it repeated, well, it may be just what some other beginner needs to know. It either to seems ok (with luck) or it is all over like a long V back towards a point, or some other long stitch How do I correct this problem >> Hi Peri, I've noticed this myself, and have meant to look into it, but... It occurs when you have somehow clicked once with the needle cursor on, or the program mistakenly thinks you have, or something like that. If you don't see any stitches set on the screen, but the color ribbon on the right of the Thred screen is a solid color, then you have a single stitch set in your design, so when you fill a form, Thred will draw a line from that single stitch to the form. If we can catch Thred putting in that stitch when it is not supposed to and make it repeat, then I can fix that problem. If you have inadvertently left clicked on the stitch window, then there's not a lot I can do about it, since the program has no way of detecting the difference between an accidental click and a "real" click. If you notice that there is a single stitch set and you don't want that, then you can go "control-A" "control-X" and that will get rid of the stitch. If you notice the condition after you have filled a form, then you can go, "Home" "Delete" and that will fix the problem. To add a stitch to the end of the design, hit "control-End" or select "add" from the main menu. I hope this helps. Thanks for your comments. Test to see if you succeeded, by using "Control V" to be sure. Then you can select your form, and use "fill/clipboard" or "fill/border/clipboard". The Picot border needs a clipboard entry too. Don't try to use too large a group of stitches for either, but for a border, you can use slightly larger ones. Can you select a group of stitches yet? The "C" key, or clicking on the stitch (sometimes you need to turn of the form, using "frm+/-"). The arrow keys move you through the stitch order, and if you hold the "Shift" key while you use them, you can add to or subtract from the selection. I usually use the "add" to get my stitches ready. I hit "Add", then make my little gizmo and hit the "end" key. Then I hold down the "Shift" and walk through the stitches backward with the left arrow, collecting them into my selection as I go. If I go too far, I just use the right arrow key to go the other way. Left = toward the beginning of the design. Right = toward the end of the design. "Up" and "Down" are for moving through your forms (hit "Q" first, so nothing is selected). The 'copy to clipboard' does not work like other windows programs. The clipboard is used for filling forms and for border fills. To get a group of stitches that you wish to use for a fill onto the clipboard, select the group of stitches and press C. This puts the stitches into the clipboard. Now define your form and use the fill / clipoard or fill / border / clipboard to put the stitches along the form just defined. To copy a form or group of forms or stitches or group of stitches, select them (see next paragraph) then press Edit (menu bar) / Copy to layer / 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4. (To begin with you will be working on layer 0.) To select a form right click a form point. You can select more than one form at a time by holding the Shift key down at the same time as right clicking. To select stitches there are several methods listed in the manual. Do the same thing for the other points. You can then move the points with guidelines around to make the fan how you want to look. Then fill / fan. If your form is small, make the stitch length 9mm and you should get a satin fill fanning out how you defined it. You can add more form points by 'W' near another form point. To make a 'non stick' side (where stitches will not attach to the side of the form) do the 'D' along that side. You can definitely do it her way. There is another way to get the fan fill, too. If you make a line form, then select it and use "Edit/convert to satin ribbon" the program will make a fan fill set-up for you with a nonstick "D" line at each end. You will find more "D" (direction) lines along the length. If you drag them around you'll be able to direct the flow of the stitches. I find that function needs a closer stitch density that the others for some reason, so I often set my preferences at about .18 before I "convert to satin ribbon". You can change it later by selecting the form and then using the "F" key to get the form-form. Then you change the stitch density entry in the form-form. You can also make the sparsely filled outer edge of a curve look better by adding form points to the inner one (try it, it works) using the "W" or the "E" keys. "W" when you want one or two, "E" when you want to enter a lot of them. (My memory aids are in italics.) You can see the results of this method in my appliqué designs on the designs for sale, which were made by making a form and using the line fill, then duplicating it so as to make two rounds of anchoring stitches. Making another form for the individual petals and then using the "convert to satin ribbon." The automatic appliqué is fine for things with columns that remain the same width- a frame, for example. But I wanted to have lots of curves in the morning glory, and the leaves. I've been planning to write a step by step and release a new free design of the gardenia I use on the corners of the pages of the Thredworks website. I guess I'd better get to work. The design is made, but the description isn't, and that's the hard part for me. I've spent a lot of time trying to make designs with shading done in satin stitches so that they look like traditional Chinese needle painting. The kind where the different colors interlock and "blend" when seen from a distance. Stay tuned. I'll get it yet. So far they have either been a lumpy or sparse in places. Isn't it easy to see the jump stitches in the movie ("I" key)? Just drag the thing on the top of the screen to slow it down. Another way to get a really good look at your design s to use the "Up to". Pick (select) the long stitch that you think may need to be edited, then hit the "Up to" on the left side. You can walk through the design using the left and right arrows. Just don't forget it's on, or you can give yourself a terrible shock. I've convinced myself I'd somehow lost half my design before, by forgetting the "Up to" was on. Joyce Sutton wrote: >>> Can you use a cross stitch as a fill? <<< Hi Joyce, I thought for sure we had answered that, I apologize. Sure you can. You need to put it on the clipboard. (Use "Control C" or "Control X") Then select your form, and click "fill/clipboard". As a border fill applied on a line form, the clipboard entry (your cross stitch) will look the same as it looked when you put it on the clipboard. If you put it on a free hand, or other kind of closed form, Thred may change the ends to make it connect better. If you use a Clipboard fill, Thred will change the shape to fit it into curves . Marion was writing a second clipboard fill and I stopped him, because I felt we were running out of development time. He plans to get back to it as soon as possible. That version will cut off the clip to fit, instead of squeezing it. You can avoid having a clipboard fill squeezed by putting "D" lines on the form. Thred fills a form one section at a time where the sections are marked off by the D-lines. If the sides of the form section marked off by D-lines are equal, the clipboard fill will not be squeezed. So you might use a box shaped form, with the vertical sides each having a "D" line. (Make those by holding ht cursor near a form point and hitting "D". A new line will appear under the cursor, and you can pull the cursor to the other end, click and it will be a nonstich line. Marion wrote some notes about "D" lines and I pasted them below: ***The "D" lines divide up a form into sections. The software takes each section at a time and finds the shortest side. It divides the length of that side by the stitch spacing set by the user to get the number of stitches. When used in the clipboard fill, the "stitch spacing" is the width of the clipboard fill. The "D" lines can't cross each other, so Thred goes through the form and adjusts them every time one is entered so that none of them cross. If "D" lines are set between two adjacent form points Thred displays a Thicker line there to indicate the "D" line. Alfie calls these "Teflon lines" because no stitches will stick to them. There can be only two teflon lines per form. When you enter the first teflon line, Thred will move the zero point of the form to be one end of the teflon line. Thred always starts computing the fan or clipboard fill at the zero form point.*** I hope this helps. What this means is that a file saved as 256 shades of gray doesn't work. Try copying the bitmap file into the same directory (folder) you plan to keep the designs in. You ought to be able to use the Windows Explorer to do that, by dragging it. Then it ought to open easily. Open Thred, then use "File/Load Bitmap". If that doesn't work, you may need to find out more about your clipart. Is it a .bmp file, and is it either b/w or "millions of colors"? Some graphics are .jpg files, which won't work, but can be converted in Paint. If you have a design printed out, you can scan it and save as bitmap then use that. But there is some likelihood that you might violate a copyright if you do it that way. The book, Digitizing using Windows Paint, by Bocca Sue Rambo, teaches preparing bitmaps using Windows Paint. You can generally find a copyright notice somewhere on the source of the drawing. Some let you sue them, some let you use a certain number of them, and some let you sue them, but not for things that you sell. The safest thing is to make your own image, or work from a photograph you took yourself. But, you can find clipart you can use. Read the notice, and then if you are in doubt, write the website owner, or the company an e-mail. That does slow down the spontaneous creative urge, but copyright law is really complex. Better safe than sued. Alf Huguette Brun wrote: > Hi, > Does anyone know about copyright violation re: > copying a clipart > downloaded from the web. June 219 From: Thred Customer Service Date: Sun Nov 12, 2000 9:11am Subject: What to do when you download the new version but your icon still gives you the old one? FAQ You downloaded the new version of Thred. You had a version on the computer before, and now the icon opens the old version. What should you do to fix it so when you click the icon, you get the right version- in the right folder along with the key so it will save your files? You can identify the version number that is open by using "View/About Thred". The version number will appear. Currently the latest version is 1.027. Your icon probably points to the old version. You can change that by right clicking on your icon, then selecting "Properties". Go to the "Shortcut" tab and check for the destination folder. If you chose default when you ran the self installing version of Thred, it should read "C:/program files/thred". If it doesn't, choose the "find target" option and see that it reads the location of your most recent download. You may need to check that folder and see that your Thredkey.bin file is there. If not, you need to move it or copy it there To do that, open two copies of the Windows Explorer, select the file, drag it to the new location in your Windows Explorer. Select your choice from the little box. Marion's been writing a new install program that will find the old version no matter where you put it. When he he's confident that the bugs are out, we'll upload a version that will be easy for everyone. This week we installed a new computer and tore apart our LAN server to install a larger hard drive. It always takes extra time to get that set up correctly. I wish I could see the place on your design that you are talking about. I'm not confident that I know what you mean. When you do a rotate and duplicate, you want to be sure you have cleaned up your clipboard entry first, So there are now little lines of stitches or extra knots to slow down the stitch out. Then you don't have a multiple fix to deal with. Is this at all helpful? The option Edit (menu bar) / Sort / By Form - or Shift F2 - will sort by form number within colour. 'black color 1 ' form 2, form 5, 'dk blue color 2' form 0, form 3, 'blue color 3' form 1, form 4 (colors are the left hand colors, not the 'real' colors that you choose) To change the number of your form, use the '/' key and put in the number you would like it to be, starting from 0. For example, if you have a 'black' form numbered 5, and you'd like it to sew first, do '/' then 0. Thred will then renumber all the other forms. I use Shift F2 almost all the time when I make any sort of a change. There is another Sort (auto), which goes through how close stitches are, but I find I have less control over this one. To find out the order of forms, press the key to make sure you've nothing selected, then use the 'up arrow' and Thred will select forms in form order number, and show you the form number on the left of your screen. To underlay an area I would make a form with a very sparse fill (on pref (menu bar) about 2.0, depending on what it is), with an angle opposite to the one that it will be underneath. On pref I would also select 'Fill Ends' 'Square', not pointed. This makes a good underlay fill. Remember to reset your pref afterwards! Then I would find out the form numbers which I am underlaying, use the '/' key to change the number of the underlay form to less than them, and press edit (menu bar) / sort / by form (or Shift F2). I was going to ask the question, but I think I worked it out, - maybe you can tell me if I've got the idea right. 1. Right click to select the stitch which you want your new stitches to come after. (For me this would be a stitch in the middle of the nose of the bear) 2. Left click Edit (menu bar) / Set / Order Mark. An arrow should appear at the stitch. 3. Select the stitches to move, and left click Edit (menu bar) / Move / To Mark. (for me I would have selected the mouth) This would stitch out the mouth in the middle of stitching out the nose, so you don't have jumps. I am saving all of it in file and actually printing out most of it so when my computer friend has time to sit down and help me I will have a database to help her. If she would buy the program it would help but she is not interested in it. She uses PeDesign without problems and is patiently helping me when I have questions. In fact she often will do it for me which I love but doesn't help me learn anything. She understands my "want to " to learn to do cross stitch fills and automatic type applique as I am into quilting but she isn't . but she loves me so she will learn to use thred because I want to use it even is she doesn't understand why. The math involved in creating the best sequence is far from trivial. There are several ways to approach it. It is usually best to plan your design with that in mind before you start. On a design already in progress, you can use "edit/sort/auto" (F3). This may or may not be better than what you already have, so be sure to save the unsorted design, or use undo to restore it if the sort does something strange to your design. You can also use "edit/sort/by Form" (F3+Shift). This one starts with form 0 and stitches each form in turn. You can use "edit/set/form number (/) to change the form numbers and control sort by form. Understanding where an angle, vertical, or horizontal fill will end is also not easy. I would just fill the form and find the end stitch. You can do this by selecting a form and then choosing "edit/ungroup/last" {]}. I hope this helps some, Marion jlouholland@g... wrote: > Last night I was working on digitizing a version of a > block print of > an angel done my my grandson. In the manual it says that all forms are rotated to be vertical and then filled, so one can work it out. But when I create a design (at the moment), I create all my forms without even thinking about jumps, then I press Shift F3 to sort them, and then check out all the jump stitches. Things that I do to minimize jumps: 1. Change the stitching order of forms by using the '/' key to renumber, then Shift F3 to sort. 2. Change the Form Zero Point by choosing a point (Y key) then Edit / Set / Form Zero Point. Then Unfill and fill the form again. 3. Edit / Flip / Order. I use the 'undo' function a lot with this one . 4. When you've got your forms all mostly together, then hide the jump stitches under the stitching by selecting a stitch, pressing the space bar, and inserting stitches. Would like to know where it goes and if I can get it back. I save the design by every part but bmp will just not be there when I want to stop and then come back to it. Shirley b 254 From: Date: Tue Nov 14, 2000 6:23pm Subject: Re: stitches between forms Hi! I was just playing with the program trying out some of the different features. I made a triangle and copied and pasted it like in Vanessa's video. Then I made each triangle a different color. I could still see jump stitches between the triangles. How do you add another form to a design without getting jump stitches. I thought they wouldn't show up if the forms were different colors because the embroidery machine should do a tie off and cut the thread. If I use a Wingding Font in PE Design and convert it to PCS then opon it in Thred as a PCS file can I use that design as a clipboard file to use as a border without having to do a freehand form over the top. OK stop scratching your head I haven't lost me marbles. I think what I'm trying to find out is do I have to make my own clipboard borders or can I import from another program other than PCS. Now whilst that ones computing can I use ordinary Fonts in Thred? I'll go and make you a coffee whilst you ponder. You should be able to do what you described. I have planned to do that, but I got my PED Friday. I'm still groping my way through the user's manuals for the machine and the program both. You are way ahead of me there. My first assumption was that you ought to be able to put the stitches onto eh clipboard in PED and have Thred recognize and use them, but we tested it and it doesn't work. PED uses some different way to store the data on the clipboard. Marion will have to figure that out and write a little code before you can clip directly from PED, but you can open in Thred a file that you created in PED, exported as PCS and then put the stitch group onto the clipboard by selecting the stitches. Sounds pretty round about, but we'll work on simplifying the method. > I think what I'm trying to find out is do I have to > make my own clipboard > borders or can I import from another program other > than PCS. It looks like you can use PED stitches, but only after you open the file in Thred or PCD (which means it has to be either PCS or DST) and then put your stitches on the Windows Clipboard. You can clip stitches in PCS and then paste them directly into Thred, or use then for clipboard fills or borders. > Now whilst that ones computing can I use ordinary > Fonts in Thred? I am a little unsure what you mean here. Are you talking about the way PED makes a font into a stitch pattern? If so, well Thred can't do that. If you mean selecting an ordinary font you "did" in PED, then exported in PCS to Thred or PCD and selected for the clipboard, that ought ot work. Glynda Black has just written a message on ThredTalk about the clipboard. You may want to read that also. I do have another question. While working on a fairly complex design, I used the box select with several free hand forms to fill all at once. The fill had a 45 degree angle and, what happened was that every other selected form had a 135 degree angle (like the fill had been flipped over). Odd, huh? Anyway when I went back and filled them individually none got flipped. Did I miss something in the instructions or accidentally push too many buttons (I am a button pusher, it often gets me stuck!). It was duplicatable even with just 4 free hand forms.
